Building Industry Association assists with Rebuilding Together's Day of Doors

On Oct. 8 Rebuilding Together Fargo-Moorhead Area partnered with Building Industry Association of the Red River Valley to install doors in tne homes across Fargo and Moorhead. It was a great success! Every homeowner we helped was excited and so grateful to know that they would have protection from the weather this winter.

Volunteers included members of the BIA's Professional Women in Building Council, D&M Industries and Rusco Windows & Cabinetry. Click here for photo highlights on the BIA-RRV's Facebook page.

One story was extra special. When we talk about safety at Rebuilding Together, we are usually referring to trip hazards and health issues. On Tuesday we were addressing something different. One of our door recipients was a single mom. Her neighborhood had seen a rash of break-ins (including her next-door-neighbor). Because this homeowner’s door had been badly damaged during a previous domestic disturbance, her home was especially susceptible to future break-ins. Her young son had been sleeping with his golf club because he felt unsafe.

On Thursday we received a phone call from her. She told us that on Tuesday evening they just sat and looked at their new door. They knew they were safe.

To most of us, a door is just a door. We get home, lock it, and go about our evening. But for this family it represents so much more. Every day they had to look at the door and see the bad memories from what had occurred. And every night they worried about who might be able to break in because it was so obviously compromised.

We are only able to do projects like this because of supporters like you.

You have an impact in your community, and I want to thank you from all our program participants; from the couple who has a replacement to their 70-year-old door to the family who can sleep safely at night.
